Overview

Galafold (active ingredient: migalastat) is a prescription medicine specifically indicated for the long-term treatment of Fabry disease in adults and adolescents aged 12 years and older. It is unique because it is an oral pharmacological chaperone therapy, meaning it works by stabilizing the body’s own dysfunctional alpha-galactosidase A (alpha-Gal A) enzyme.

Galafold is not for all patients with Fabry disease. Its use is limited to those who have a confirmed diagnosis of Fabry disease and possess a specific type of genetic mutation (called an “amenable mutation”) in the GLA gene. These amenable mutations lead to misfolded, but still partially functional, alpha-Gal A enzymes that Galafold can help correct. Genetic testing is essential to determine if a patient’s mutation is amenable to Galafold treatment.
