Overview

Geri-Dryl is an over-the-counter (OTC) medication primarily used as an antihistamine. Its active ingredient is diphenhydramine, which is a first-generation antihistamine. This means it works by blocking histamine, a natural substance your body produces during allergic reactions. When histamine is released, it causes symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes, and itching.

Geri-Dryl is used to temporarily relieve symptoms associated with:

  • Allergies: Hay fever (seasonal allergies), other upper respiratory allergies, and common cold symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and itchy or watery eyes. It can also help with skin rash, hives, and itching.
  • Motion Sickness: It can help prevent and treat nausea, vomiting, and dizziness caused by motion sickness.
  • Insomnia: Due to its sedative (sleep-inducing) effects, it’s also used to help people fall asleep when they have occasional sleeplessness.
  • Parkinsonism: In some cases, it’s used to help control certain symptoms of Parkinson’s disease or drug-induced movement disorders.

It’s important to note that while effective, Geri-Dryl’s use, especially in older adults, requires careful consideration due to its side effect profile.
