Overview

Geri-Kot is an over-the-counter (OTC) laxative primarily used to relieve occasional constipation (irregularity). Its active ingredient is sennosides, which are natural compounds derived from the senna plant. Sennosides belong to a class of medications known as stimulant laxatives.

When you’re constipated, you might experience infrequent bowel movements, difficulty passing stools, or hard stools. Geri-Kot works by stimulating the muscles in your intestines to contract, which helps move stool through your digestive system. It typically produces a bowel movement within 6 to 12 hours after taking it, which is why it’s often recommended to be taken at bedtime for overnight relief. Besides occasional constipation, sennosides may also be used in some cases to help clean out the intestines before certain medical procedures like a colonoscopy (though this would be specifically directed by a doctor).
