Overview

Armodafinil is a medication that is prescribed to patients suffering from extreme sleepiness associated with narcolepsy, obstructive sleeping apnea (OSA) and even shift work naps (SWSD). It is a form of stimulant to the central nervous system (CNS) which is responsible for encouraging alertness. Armodafinil is however more popularly known as a “wakefulness promoting agent’ and is a registered trademark of Nuvigil Company.

Armodafinil is a derivative of modafinil (also referred to as Provigil) and both produce similar outcomes, as Armodafinil is the R-enantiomer of modafinil and therefore a purer form of the active ingredient. Thus, the scenario of armodafinil’s being effective for an extended period of time is plausible.

Armodafinil is usually prescribed in cases of excessive drowsiness when other measures including lifestyle changes, better sleep hygiene or other medications have not worked.
