Overview

Augmentin is a widely prescribed antibiotic medication used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is a combination of two active ingredients: amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium.

Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic that works by preventing bacteria from forming their cell walls, leading to their destruction. Clavulanate potassium is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that prevents some bacteria from inactivating amoxicillin, thereby it becomes much more effective.

Augmentin is available in various forms such as tablets, oral suspension, and intravenous formulations for different infection severities and patient needs.
