Overview

Avapritinib is a targeted therapy drug primarily intended for use with certain types of cancer. It is used most predominantly in the treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) and other cancers caused by a specific genetic mutation. This drug is classified as a kinase inhibitor.

This means it works by blocking specific enzymes, known as kinases, which promote the growth and spread of cancer cells. Avapritinib is generally thought to be a breakthrough therapy for the advanced GIST or other cancers from mutations in the KIT and PDGFRA genes.

Developed by the biotech firm Blueprint Medicines and approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for medical use in 2020, avapritinib is designed to target selected mutations that it matches better than traditional cancer treatments
