Overview

BabyBIG, or Botulism Immune Globulin Intravenous, is a type of medical intervention used in babies diagnosed with botulism-a rare, but potentially life-threatening disease caused by Clostridium botulinum. The symptoms involve muscle weakness, paralysis, and failure of the respiratory system, which can cause death if left untreated.

Botulism is the entry of botulinum toxin from C. botulinum into the human body, interfering with nerve functioning, causing a host of symptoms, which include inability to swallow, breathe, and control the muscles. It can be acquired either through food poisoning or contamination of wounds and, in infants, from spores found in honey or dust.

BabyBIG is a specific treatment designed for infant botulism, and it has been proven to significantly improve the prognosis and speed of recovery for affected infants.
