Overview

The common usage of combination antibiotic ointment for bacitracin and polymyxin B in topical application generally is for superficial infections of skin by susceptible bacteria. Such topical antibiotics make two different agents—bacitracin and polymyxin B, which provide broadspectrum coverage through synergies with a broad variety of different bacterial pathogens. It mainly includes minor cuts, scrapes, burns, or small wounds that could be liable to bacterial infections.

This ointment is commonly over the counter but can be prescribed by doctors to treat more serious infections. The two antibiotics, bacitracin and polymyxin B, work synergistically in that bacitracin kills gram-positive bacteria and polymyxin B kills gram-negative bacteria. It gives a comprehensive approach in the prevention and treatment of infections of the skin.
