Overview

Benadryl is a widely used over the counter antihistaminic medicine primarily used to help those affected by allergy symptoms of sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes and rashes. Commonly known as diphenhydramine is prescribed for relief of such manifestations due to hay fever or cold. Benadryl is also commonly used to treat insomnia, motion sickness, and nausea, besides its use in the treatment of itching from insect bites or skin rashes.

Benadryl was first introduced in 1946, and it is available in various forms such as tablets, capsules, liquid, and topical creams. Benadryl is effective for allergy symptom treatment, but it also has a sedative effect and can cause drowsiness, making it very useful for insomnia or any sleep-related problems. However, it should be used exactly as directed to avoid unwanted side effects, especially for children and the elderly.
