Overview

Budesonide is a corticosteroid used mainly for the treatment of inflammation associated conditions in the lung and the gastrointestinal system. A glucocorticoid, budesonide functions through inflammation reduction, thereby providing symptomatic relief from chronic diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and inflammatory bowel disease which include Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis.

Budesonide is administered in various formulations, including inhalers, nasal sprays, and oral capsules, depending on the condition. It is a locally acting corticosteroid, which means that it is primarily exerting its effects at the site of inflammation and has relatively less systemic absorption and fewer systemic side effects compared to other corticosteroids.
