Overview

Canagliflozin is a medication used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in individuals with both type 2 diabetes and a high risk of heart disease. It belongs to a class of drugs known as sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. Canagliflozin works by preventing the kidneys from reabsorbing glucose back into the bloodstream, leading to glucose being excreted in the urine, thereby lowering blood sugar levels.

In addition to treating type 2 diabetes, canagliflozin is also prescribed to reduce the risk of heart failure and chronic kidney disease progression in individuals with diabetes. This makes it an important medication for patients with coexisting cardiovascular and kidney conditions, which are common complications of diabetes.
