Overview

Capecitabine is a chemotherapeutic agent that comes in pill form and is metabolized into 5-fluorouracil, which is an active chemotherapeutic agent. Because of its oral formulation, patients are able to take this medication with less inconvenience than the more commonly used IV formulations for chemotherapy. Chemotherapy, with 5-FU being one of the more commonly used drugs, for colon, rectal, and breast cancers, has made this a very widely prescribed medication, providing a choice between IV treatments.

It is generally prescribed along with other therapies that treat cancer, but in certain situations, it may be used alone as per the specific case and the type of cancer.
