Overview

Caplacizumab is a monoclonal antibody intended for the treatment of acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (aTTP). The disease is characterized by small blood clots formed all over the body as a result of abnormal platelet aggregation, which results in damage to organs, thrombocytopenia, and potentially life-threatening complications.

Caplacizumab is used in conjunction with plasma exchange and immunosuppressive therapy to treat and to prevent the reoccurrence of aTTP in adults. It specifically targets and binds to von Willebrand factor (vWF) and prevents the interaction between vWF and platelets, thus inhibiting abnormal clotting in aTTP.
