A trained healthcare professional will inject Definity into a vein in an outpatient clinic or hospital. It is usually administered in the following steps:
- Preparation: The healthcare provider will prepare the contrast agent and review the dose to ensure that it is appropriate for your procedure.
- Injection: Definity is administered intravenously through a needle into a vein, usually located in your arm. The injection is fast and usually painless.
- Monitoring: Following injection, your healthcare provider is going to be monitoring your vital signs and searching for side effects, which is very rare but might surface.
- Echocardiogram: When the contrast agent has been injected, the echocardiogram will be performed. A technician or cardiologist uses an ultrasound probe to obtain pictures of the heart. The microbubbles improve the structure and functions of the heart, making it easier to see.
- Post-Procedure: You will be monitored for a few hours after the scan if any adverse effects are present in the immediate period. Most patients are often able to resume normal activities within a short time.
When in use with Definity, the operation is that of suspended microbubbles within a liquid solution. The tiny microspheres float within the chambers of the heart in the bloodstream. Such microspheres have a large amount of perflutren gas, thereby possessing a very high degree of echogenicity, and for this reason, these microspheres reflect waves of ultrasound in a good way.
Working Mechanism:
- Microbubbles in the Bloodstream: By intravenous injection, the minuscule microspheres start floating in the bloodstream throughout the heart.
- Ultrasound Imaging: During an echocardiogram, ultrasound waves are injected into the body. The microbubbles reflect those sound waves back to the ultrasound machine, thereby creating contrast on the images.
- Enhanced Imaging: The reflection of the ultrasonic waves through the gas found in the bubbles enables one to see and imagine more clearly the endocardial borders of the heart; consequently, it achieves better images or pictures of the chambers of the heart, the blood flow, and functionalities of the heart.
It enhances the quality of these images, thus allowing healthcare professionals to recognize structural defects, for example, a diseased heart valve, blood clot, or poorly circulating areas of blood.
Though Definity is very well tolerated, there are some side effects, most of them are rare.
Common Side Effects:
- Mild Pain or Irritation at the Injection Site: Some patients may have a region of mild discomfort where the IV was inserted; this resolves within hours.
- Headache: A mild headache can be developed by some patients in a few hours after the injection.
Less Common but Serious Adverse Effects:
- Allergic Reactions: Although this is a rare scenario, it is possible that some patients could develop an allergic reaction, which can cause various symptoms, including rash, itching, shortness of breath, or swelling of the face or throat. In such cases, one should immediately visit a doctor.
- Cardiac Problems: At times, intravenous injection of Definity leads to cardiac arrhythmia or heart diseases. This might be because normally patients with previously known heart diseases may suffer from it.
- If you experience any signs of severe allergic reaction, or if you have chest pain along with irregular heartbeats, inform your healthcare provider immediately.
There are grave risks before you inject Definity in a patient. These include the following:
- History of Heart Diseases: If you have been diagnosed with heart diseases, especially arrhythmias, then let your doctor know. The contrast agent is going to interfere with blood flow and might trigger irregular heartbeats in vulnerable patients.
- Kidney Diseases: Inform your doctor of kidney disorders because, on occasion, contrast agents can have effects on kidney functions, and although the risks are minimal, these must not be ignored.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: If you would like to get pregnant, you are already pregnant, or if you breast-feed, consult with your doctor as there isn’t clear clinical evidence that Definity causes adverse effects on the fetus.
- Allergies: If you have any allergies concerning contrast agents, make sure to mention them to your doctor. They are very rare, but usually pretty dramatic; so it is better to be safe than sorry.
Definity is a contrast agent. It does not interact with other drugs directly unless noted; however, there are a few cases:
- Other Contrast Agents: If you are using more than one contrast agent, you need to tell your doctor. The use of more than one agent without consulting your doctor can expose you to a higher risk of complications.
- Medications That May Influence Blood Flow: If you are on anticoagulants or have heart disease, your physician may change an imaging study or observe you more closely.
- Ensure that your doctor knows all of your medications so that the safest possible use of Definity can be ensured.
The dose of Definity should be given at peak action for an echocardiography as follows:
- First Dose: 1.0 mL given intravenously.
- Repeat Injections: If you require additional images, another 0.5 mL can be given.
- Total Injection: Inject not more than 4.0 mL in 24 hours.
- Contraindicate and precaution by a qualified professional, and an adequate dose must be administered to minimize side effects of the contrast.
