This medication is simple to take but how to use is proper:
- Measure the Dose: Take the dosed amount to be precise at 30 mL using the measuring cup. You should never use a common spoon in the kitchen because it could lead to dosing inaccuracies.
- Timing: These tablets should be taken at night because it can stay in one’s body in relieving them all night and especially when worst. However, once you have got another dose, make sure you always wait for up to 4 hours before your doses.
- To Swallow: After measuring them, take as directed. Syrup does not need to have food, although you may sip water afterward when you feel having an aftertaste.
- Do not take more than the dose that is prescribed, and in case you missed a dose, do not take a double dose. Just return to your normal schedule the next time.
This medicine has several active ingredients that are targeting different symptoms:
- Cough Suppressant (Dextromethorphan): It acts centrally on the cough center in the brain, suppressing the cough reflex, reduces the urge to cough, but is most helpful for dry, nonproductive coughs that occur at night and worsen as the night continues.
- Antihistamine (Diphenhydramine): This is prescribed for sneezing, rhinorrhea, or any other presentation of congestion associated with colds or allergies. This medication is also a sedative; hence, its use will help the patients sleep well when the symptoms come at night.
- Pain Reliever (Acetaminophen): This is a pain reliever that also addresses minor aches, pains, and fevers associated with the common cold or flu. It does this by blocking pain messages in the brain in addition to causing inflammation of the tissues.
- Nasal Decongestant (Phenylephrine): Phenylephrine reduces nasal congestion because it works to reduce blood flow through some blood vessels within the nasal passage so that breathing can be enhanced.
This combination drug provides a compound relief, through which patients can sleep with multiple symptoms managed while they would otherwise sleep.
Just as with any drug, this product causes side effects and not everyone in the human race will develop them. Some of the common side effects include:
Common Side Effects:
- Sleepiness: The diphenhydramine antihistamine is a central nervous system depressant that causes sleepiness. This may be an advantage at night but leaves you feeling pretty groggy the next morning.
- Dizziness or Lightheadedness: Some patients also complain of dizziness or lightheadedness, especially when getting up from a sitting position.
- Dry Mouth or Throat: Antihistamines also cause dryness of the mouth or throat, and this is often somewhat of a nuisance.
- Nausea or Stomach Upset: Some patients’ stomachs often present a slight uneasiness or nausea.
Serious Side Effects:
- Allergic Reactions: During treatment, a patient might react to one of the ingredients used in the medicine. This may cause inflammation, rash, or even breathing problems. Then, they should be seen by a doctor immediately.
- Overdose Symptoms: If the user takes too much of the drug, then they will feel some really terrible effects: confusion, tachycardia, coma, and also liver failure due to acetaminophen.
- If you feel any of the serious side effects of this medication, immediately call your doctor.
For using this multi-symptom product, note the following warnings and cautions:
- Dosage Limitation: This drug should be used only in adults; it should be given in pediatric patients only under close supervision on the part of a physician. Much of the anti-sedation and decongestant response may not safely be tolerated with younger patients.
- Underlying Medical Conditions: The medicine should be provided only if a person is affected by complications of the liver, hypertension, or other chronic illness. The decongestant phenylephrine may rarely cause an increase in blood pressure.
- Pregnancy and Lactation: This drug application for a pregnant woman should be consulted with your doctor; also, any medication given to a lactating woman should be first cross-checked with your doctor.
- Avoid Alcohol: Alcohol may increase the sedative effects and cause dangerous drowsiness or other adverse effects. Avoid alcohol while taking this drug.
Always be aware of drugs and substances that may interact with the active ingredients:
- Alcohol: The side effects of diphenhydramine when taken with the drug are intensified by alcohol or any other sleeping pill.
- Antidepressants or MAOIs: There is always a possibility that adding to this other antidepressant or MAOI is most likely to produce hazardous side effects, for example, tachycardia and even severely increased blood pressure.
- Other Over-the-Counter Cold or Cough Preparations: Using several drugs containing active ingredients that cause similar actions could lead to overdose on acetaminophen and other active ingredients, hence causing side effects.
- Always seek consultation with your doctor or pharmacist before using the drug on another drug to ensure that it does not lead to bad effects.
