Duoplant should be taken as instructed by your physician. Below is a general guide on how to use both components of Duoplant:
Minoxidil (Topical Use):
- Apply 1 mL of minoxidil solution in the morning and evening to the scalp.
- Dry the scalp before applying the solution. Massage it in with your fingertips and let it dry.
- Wash your hands thoroughly after administering the drug.
Finasteride (Oral Administration):
- Take one 5 mg finasteride tablet once a day, ideally at the same time each day.
- You can take it with or without food, but try to take it at the same time each day.
Key Points:
- Be regular, as 3-6 months (average) will witness the visible effects.
- Don’t overdose, as taking more than the prescribed amount won’t hasten results and may even enhance side effects.
Duoplant works because of the simultaneous action of its two components:
Minoxidil (Topical Solution):
- Minoxidil is applied on the scalp, which widens the blood supply to the hair follicles. This is likely to awake resting hair follicles and promote new hair growth.
- Minoxidil is also likely to open the blood vessels of the scalp, through which there is increased absorption of nutrients and oxygen, which are essential for hair growth.
Finasteride (Oral Medication):
- Finasteride does this by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is one of the key causes of male pattern baldness because it causes miniaturizing of hair follicles, which results in thinning of the hair as well as balding.
- Finasteride reduces DHT levels, thereby prevents baldness and even causes regrowth of hair in the long term.
The interaction of these two active ingredients works to cure baldness from two fronts, stimulating hair growth and inhibiting further loss.
Similar to any medication, Duoplant comes with side effects. These are either mild or severe and need to be reported to your doctor if experienced.
Common Side Effects:
- Scalp irritation: Redness, dryness, or itching on the site of application of minoxidil.
- Dizziness or lightheadedness (primarily with minoxidil).
- Headaches.
- Sexual side effects: Diminished libido, erectile dysfunction, or other sexual health issues in some men on finasteride.
- Serious Side Effects:
- Chest pain, palpitations, or swelling of hands or feet may be seen with minoxidil.
- Severe allergic reactions: Rash, hives, or swelling (especially of the face, lips, or throat) must be treated by a doctor at once.
- Depression or mood changes: Depression or mood changes have been reported by some individuals taking finasteride.
- Notify your doctor immediately if you experience any severe or abnormal side effects.
- Blood Pressure Medications: Minoxidil affects blood pressure. If on high blood pressure medications, discuss with your physician because dosage may need to be changed.
- Other Hair Loss Pills: Other pills for hair loss (e.g., ketoconazole shampoo or other pills) should only be taken in association with Duoplant under medical supervision to avoid potential interactions.
- Pregnancy: Finasteride should not be used by pregnant women or women who might become pregnant as it can cause damage to a male fetus.
Always inform your physician about other medicines or supplements you are taking in order to avoid interactions.
