Duraflu has a combination of active ingredients that work at the same time to treat different symptoms of flu or cold:
- Acetaminophen: It is an antipyretic and analgesic which treats headache, body pain, and fever.
- Diphenhydramine: An antihistamine that blocks sneezing, watery eyes, and itching caused by colds or allergies. It also has a sedative effect that can be useful in inducing sleep.
- Pseudoephedrine: A decongestant that narrows the blood vessels in the nasal passages, decreasing swelling and dilating the passages.
- Dextromethorphan: A cough suppressant that decreases the urge to cough by affecting the brain impulses that produce the coughing reflex.
By mixing these ingredients, Duraflu alleviates a number of symptoms of respiratory infections.
Duraflu is safe when used as directed, but certain individuals might experience side effects:
- Drowsiness: Drowsiness is a frequent side effect of diphenhydramine (an antihistamine). This makes it hard to remain awake and concentrate.
- Dizziness: Dizziness or fainting may occur in some individuals.
- Dry Mouth or Throat: Duraflu produces dryness of the throat and mouth based on what type of antihistamine it has.
- Nausea or Stomach Disturbance: Some patients can experience nausea or stomach disturbance.
- Increased Blood Pressure: A decongestant pseudoephedrine raises blood pressure in certain patients; hence, an increased blood-pressure patient has to be cautious.
If you have any severe side effects like shortness of breath, rash, or swelling of the face or throat, discontinue the use of Duraflu and consult a doctor immediately.
Before using Duraflu, observe the following warnings and precautions:
- Pre-existing Medical Conditions: If you have any pre-existing medical conditions like liver disease, kidney disease, hypertension, or heart disease, consult a doctor before using Duraflu.
- Pregnancy and Lactation: Consult a doctor before taking Duraflu during pregnancy or lactation because some of the ingredients of Duraflu might not be appropriate during pregnancy or lactation.
- Avoid Alcohol: The use of alcohol with Duraflu can increase the sedative effect of Duraflu, causing drowsiness or dizziness. The consumption of alcohol is not recommended during treatment.
- Children: Duraflu must not be administered to children below 12 years of age except under the advice of a medical doctor. Proper dosage procedure must always be followed in children.
- Driving and Machine Operation: Avoid driving or any task that requires alertness as Duraflu has the tendency of causing drowsiness. Avoid using vehicles or heavy machinery until you are able to determine how the drug will affect you.
