DuraTan DM works by the dual action of its active components:
Dextromethorphan
- Dextromethorphan inhibits the brain’s cough suppression reflex. It alters the brain impulses that create the urge to cough, thereby curing chronic or non-productive cough.
- It does not heal the underlying reason for cough but merely the symptom by reducing cough frequency and intensity.
Guaifenesin:
- Guaifenesin relaxes and thins the mucus of airways in order to aid easy mucus expulsion.
- It accomplishes this by activating secretions of fluid in the respiratory system to enable mucus expulsion and congestion alleviation within the chest.
- Both of these active ingredients promote both healing of coughing and congestion of the chest which usually go hand in hand in respiratory infections like colds, bronchitis, or allergies.
DuraTan DM is safe if used as instructed, but under certain circumstances, it may cause side effects. A few of the side effects include:
- Drowsiness or dizziness – particularly when the individual takes more than the instructed amount.
- Nausea or vomiting – this could be due to the effect of the drug.
- Headache – the headache is a common issue for some individuals who use DuraTan DM.
- Upset stomach or stomach upset – this is usually mild and may be eased by water or light food consumption.
Severe Side Effects (though rare) could be:
- Allergic reactions: Swelling, rash, or itching, especially in the face, tongue, or throat.
- Rapid or irregular heartbeat.
- Severe dizziness or fainting.
- Breathlessness or tightness in the chest.
If any of these severe side effects are noted, immediate medical attention is necessary.
There are some serious warnings and precautions to be remembered while taking DuraTan DM:
- Avoidance of Alcohol: Dextromethorphan has sedative properties that can be enhanced by alcohol, thus increasing the risk of negative side effects. Alcohol intake should be avoided while taking DuraTan DM.
- Pre-existing Medical Conditions: For individuals suffering from respiratory conditions (e.g., asthma or COPD), a doctor must be consulted prior to the use of DuraTan DM because it may worsen your condition.
- Pregnancy and Lactation: Pregnant and lactating women are recommended to consult a doctor prior to using DuraTan DM. The medication may not be suitable for them.
- Children: DuraTan DM should not be given to children below 2 years of age unless on a doctor’s advice. Excessive use or inappropriate dosage is detrimental.
- Chronic Cough: DuraTan DM should not be employed in the treatment of chronic cough due to infection like asthma or emphysema unless a doctor advises.
- Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs): The use of DuraTan DM with MAOIs (prescribed for depression) can cause harmful interactions, such as the potential for increased side effects like serotonin syndrome. Do not take DuraTan DM with MAOIs or within 14 days after stopping an MAOI.
- CNS Depressants: Combination of DuraTan DM with other central nervous system depressants such as alcohol, sedatives, or benzodiazepines enhances the possibility of sedation or drowsiness.
- Other Cough or Cold Medications: Combination of DuraTan DM with other cough and cold products that contain dextromethorphan or other suppressants as active ingredients is liable to result in active ingredient overdose, which is toxic.
Always consult a health care professional prior to combining any other medications with DuraTan DM.
As explained earlier, dosage is symptom- and age-based:
- Adults and children over 12 years: 10-20 mL q4h p.r.n., not more than 120 mL/day.
- Children 6-11 years: 5-10 mL q4h prn, to a maximum of 60 mL/day.
- Children 2-5 years: 2.5-5 mL q4h prn, to a maximum of 30 mL/day.
- Take exact amount on package or as directed by a healthcare provider.
DuraTan DM is an over-the-counter drug, and hence it will not require any prescription. It can be used after a doctor’s advice if you have some pre-existing disease or you are already taking some other treatment.
