To administer Duravent DM, do the following:
- Shake the Bottle: Shake well the liquid so that the ingredients are mixed together properly.
- Measure the Dose: Use measuring spoon or measuring cup for dosing the appropriate dose.
- Take by Mouth: Take the drug entire with or without food.
- Stay Hydrated: Have plenty of fluids with Duravent DM for ease of mucus clearance.
- Wash Your Hands: Wash your hands after measuring the dose to avoid transmission of the drug.
- Missed Dose: If a dose is forgotten, take the missed dose as soon as possible, except if nearly time for the next dose. Miss the missed dose—don’t double the dose to make up for a missed dose.
Duravent DM functions through the combined action of its two active components:
- Dextromethorphan (Cough Suppressant):
- Dextromethorphan suppresses the coughing action and decreases the coughing urge by affecting the brain’s cough center. It prevents irritating, persistent coughs.
- It is particularly beneficial when a cough is non-productive (i.e., mucus is not coughed up).
- Guaifenesin (Expectorant):
- Guaifenesin thinns and loosens the mucus in the airways.
- This facilitates the easy expulsion of the mucus through coughing, which can serve to relieve chest congestion and the tightness or blockage sensation in the chest.
By being both a cough suppressant and an expectorant, Duravent DM treats both coughing and congestion due to respiratory ailments effectively.
Although Duravent DM is safe when taken according to prescription, it also has some side effects, and these are:
Common Side Effects:
- Drowsiness or dizziness – the usual side effect as a result of the sedative action of dextromethorphan.
- Nausea or discomfort in the stomach – which results from an effect of the action of the medication on the stomach.
- Headache – there is headache felt by some users of Duravent DM.
Severe Side Effects (though rare):
- Allergic Reactions: The reaction may be rash, itching, or shortness of breath. In case of any, get immediate medical care.
- Rapid or abnormal heartbeat.
- Dizziness or fainting attacks.
- Chest pain or difficulty breathing.
Discontinue the drug and inform a medical professional at once if you have any of these severe side effects.
Prior to using Duravent DM, consider the following precautions:
- Avoid Alcohol: The sedative action of Duravent DM may be increased by alcohol, which can cause enhanced drowsiness or even dangerous side effects. Avoid the intake of alcohol while on this medication.
- Medical Conditions: If you suffer from respiratory diseases, asthma, or COPD, take advice from a medical practitioner before using Duravent DM.
- Pregnancy and Lactation: If pregnant or lactating, consult your doctor before taking Duravent DM. The drug’s safety in pregnancy or lactation is not established.
- Children: Duravent DM is not indicated in children below the age of 2 years. Always adhere to the age-specific dosage instructions.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs):
- It is not advisable to use Duravent DM when MAOIs (such as used for depression) are taken because it may cause severe interactions, e.g., hypertensive crises or serotonin syndrome.
CNS Depressants:
- Concomitant use of Duravent DM with alcohol or other sedatives may result in increased risk of drowsiness or sedation.
- Other Cough Products: Never combine Duravent DM with other cough products or expectants in order to avoid an overdose of active ingredients.
- Always consult a medical practitioner in case you are on other medication.
As discussed above, the dose of Duravent DM varies with the age of the patient:
- Adults and children 12 years and above: 10 to 20 mL every 4 hours, up to a maximum of 120 mL daily.
- Children aged 6 to 11 years: 5 to 10 mL every 4 hours, up to a maximum of 60 mL daily.
- Children aged 2 to 5 years: 2.5 to 5 mL every 4 hours, up to a maximum of 30 mL daily.
- Take the same amount provided and not more than the daily dosage.
Duravent DM is an over-the-counter drug, and therefore no prescription is needed. Make sure you read the package label properly and consult a physician if you are already taking other medications or if you have some medical conditions.
