- General Instructions:
- Take Dynapen exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
- If you are taking the capsule form, swallow it whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the capsules.
- Shake the oral suspension well before use if you’re using the liquid form.
- Try to take it at the same time every day to help you remember.
- Missed Dose:
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.
Never take two doses at once to make up for a missed dose.
Dynapen (dicloxacillin) works by targeting the cell wall synthesis of bacteria. Bacterial cells rely on their cell walls for structure and protection. By inhibiting the enzymes responsible for building the cell wall, Dynapen weakens the bacteria’s ability to maintain its structure, causing the bacteria to die or be unable to multiply.
- Penicillin-Binding Proteins (PBPs): Dynapen binds to specific proteins in the bacterial cell wall, preventing the cell wall from forming correctly.
- Bactericidal Action: Since it directly destroys the bacteria, Dynapen is classified as bactericidal (i.e., it kills bacteria rather than simply stopping their growth).
Effective Against Resistant Strains: Dynapen is effective against penicillin-resistant bacteria, including some strains of Staphylococcus aureus, which are commonly found in skin and soft tissue infections.
Like all medications, Dynapen can cause side effects. Some common and serious side effects include:
- Common Side Effects:
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea: Some people may experience stomach upset.
- Rash: A mild rash may develop, particularly if you are allergic to penicillin.
- Abdominal discomfort: Some users may experience gas or bloating.
- Serious Side Effects (Rare but requiring medical attention):
- Severe allergic reactions: Symptoms such as swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or hives. This could indicate a severe allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis.
- Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (CDAD): Antibiotics like Dynapen may alter the balance of bacteria in your intestines, leading to overgrowth of Clostridium difficile, which causes severe diarrhea.
Liver damage: Symptoms such as yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, or unexplained fatigue should be reported immediately.
- Probenecid: This drug can increase the levels of Dynapen in your bloodstream, which may increase the risk of side effects. If you are taking probenecid, your doctor may adjust your dosage of Dynapen.
- Other Antibiotics: Certain antibiotics, like tetracyclines, may interfere with the effectiveness of Dynapen. Always inform your doctor of any other medications you are taking.
Oral Contraceptives: Antibiotics like Dynapen can decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills, so additional forms of contraception may be necessary during treatment.
- The starting dose for most infections in adults is typically 125 mg to 500 mg every 6 hours, but your healthcare provider will determine the exact dose based on your condition.
- For children, the dosage is based on weight and is usually 12.5 mg to 25 mg per kg of body weight every 6 hours.
The duration of the treatment will depend on the severity and type of infection but usually lasts between 7 to 14 days.
Dynapen (dicloxacillin) is available only by prescription. You will need to see your doctor to determine whether Dynapen is the right treatment for your infection. The doctor will assess your condition, review your medical history, and determine the appropriate dosage.
