ED A-Hist DM should be used exactly as directed on the product label.
- Dosage: The dosage varies by age and the specific product (tablet vs. liquid). Always use the provided measuring device for the liquid form to ensure accuracy.
- Frequency: It is typically taken every 4 hours as needed for symptom relief. Do not exceed the recommended dose in a 24-hour period.
- Short-Term Use: This medication is for short-term use to relieve cold and allergy symptoms. If your symptoms do not improve within one week, or if they worsen or are accompanied by a fever, rash, or persistent headache, you should stop using the medication and consult a doctor.
- Children: Do not give this medication to children under 6 years of age without a doctor’s recommendation.
The three active ingredients work together to provide multi-symptom relief:
- Chlorpheniramine is a first-generation antihistamine. It works by blocking the effects of histamine, a substance the body releases during an allergic reaction, which causes symptoms like sneezing, itching, and a runny nose.
- Dextromethorphan works on the cough center in the brain (the medulla oblongata) to suppress the cough reflex.
- Phenylephrine is a vasoconstrictor. It works by narrowing the blood vessels in the nasal passages, which reduces swelling and congestion, making it easier to breathe through the nose.
Side effects of ED A-Hist DM can range from common to more serious.
- Common Side Effects: Drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, headache, upset stomach, and nervousness.
- Serious Side Effects: Increased heart rate, palpitations, high blood pressure, confusion, hallucinations, or difficulty urinating (especially in men with an enlarged prostate). Children may experience excitability or agitation.
- Allergic Reactions: Seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing.
ED A-Hist DM can have several important drug interactions. It is crucial to inform your doctor or pharmacist about all medications, vitamins, and supplements you are taking.
- MAO Inhibitors: Do not use this medication if you are currently taking or have stopped taking an MAO inhibitor (e.g., isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue) within the last 14 days. This combination can lead to a dangerous increase in blood pressure.
- CNS Depressants: The antihistamine and cough suppressant in ED A-Hist DM can cause drowsiness. Combining it with alcohol, sedatives, tranquilizers, opioids, or other drugs that cause drowsiness can increase the risk of severe sedation, dizziness, and respiratory depression.
- Other Stimulants/Decongestants: Do not take other medications that contain decongestants or stimulants without consulting a doctor, as this can increase the risk of side effects like increased heart rate and high blood pressure.
- Medications for High Blood Pressure: The phenylephrine in this product can increase blood pressure and may interfere with the effectiveness of certain blood pressure medications.
ED A-Hist DM is an over-the-counter (OTC) medication. It does not require a prescription. However, it is essential to follow all label directions and consult a healthcare professional for guidance, especially for children or individuals with pre-existing medical conditions.
