Ed ChlorPed works through the combined effects of its two active ingredients:
- Chlorpheniramine (Antihistamine):
- Chlorpheniramine is a first-generation antihistamine, meaning it works by blocking the action of histamine, a chemical released during allergic reactions.
- By blocking histamine, chlorpheniramine reduces symptoms like itching, sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes, which are common in allergies.
- Pseudoephedrine (Decongestant):
- Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant that narrows the blood vessels in the nasal passages. This action helps reduce nasal swelling, allowing for easier breathing through the nose and providing relief from nasal congestion.
Together, chlorpheniramine and pseudoephedrine target both the allergic symptoms (like sneezing and itching) and congestion, providing comprehensive relief from common allergy and cold-related symptoms.
As with all medications, Ed ChlorPed may cause side effects. The most common side effects are due to chlorpheniramine, a sedating antihistamine.
- Common Side Effects:
- Drowsiness or sedation
- Dry mouth
- Dizziness
- Headache
- Nausea or vomiting
- Nervousness or restlessness (due to pseudoephedrine)
- Serious Side Effects:
- Increased heart rate or palpitations: Pseudoephedrine can cause an increase in blood pressure and heart rate, which can be concerning for individuals with heart conditions.
- Difficulty urinating: Some individuals, particularly older adults, may experience urinary retention.
- Severe allergic reactions: Although rare, symptoms like rash, swelling, or trouble breathing should be addressed immediately by seeking medical help.
- Mental confusion or agitation (in elderly patients).
Overdose Symptoms: Overdose can cause symptoms such as extreme drowsiness, dry mouth, difficulty breathing, severe dizziness, or fast heartbeat. Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose is suspected.
