Overview

Efgartigimod alfa (brand name Vyvgart) is a monoclonal antibody medication used to treat autoimmune diseases by targeting and inhibiting a specific protein involved in immune system dysfunction. Specifically, Efgartigimod alfa is used to treat Generalized Myasthenia Gravis (gMG), a chronic autoimmune disorder where the body’s immune system attacks the communication between nerves and muscles, leading to muscle weakness.

The medication works by targeting and blocking the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn), which plays a key role in prolonging the lifespan of antibodies in the body. By inhibiting FcRn, Efgartigimod alfa helps lower the levels of pathogenic antibodies that are responsible for attacking the neuromuscular junction in gMG. This mechanism of action helps reduce symptoms of gMG, leading to improved muscle strength and function.

Efgartigimod alfa is typically used in adult patients who are experiencing moderate to severe symptoms of Generalized Myasthenia Gravis, and who have not responded adequately to other treatments, including immunosuppressants or cholinesterase inhibitors.
