Administration Guidelines:
- Take one 320 mg tablet orally once a day, at the same time each day.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water.
- You can take it with or without food, though food may reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
- Do not take with dairy products, antacids, or supplements containing calcium, magnesium, aluminum, iron, or zinc within a few hours before or after the dose.
Important Tips:
- Complete the entire course, even if symptoms improve before finishing the medication.
- Stay hydrated while taking Factive.
- Do not skip doses. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s near the time for the next dose—do not double up.
Factive contains gemifloxacin mesylate, a synthetic fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It works by targeting two bacterial enzymes: DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, both essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair. When these enzymes are inhibited, the bacterial cells cannot reproduce or survive.
This mechanism of action allows Factive to:
- Kill bacteria at the source of infection.
- Stop the progression of symptoms like cough, fever, and chest discomfort.
- Work against a wide range of respiratory pathogens, including:
- Streptococcus pneumoniae
- Haemophilus influenzae
- Moraxella catarrhalis
- Mycoplasma pneumoniae
- Chlamydophila pneumoniae
Because of its broad-spectrum activity, Factive is particularly useful in treating respiratory infections in patients who may be at risk of antibiotic resistance or who have failed other first-line treatments.
Common Side Effects:
- Nausea or diarrhea
- Headache
- Rash
- Dizziness
- Insomnia or sleep disturbances
These effects are usually mild and temporary but should be reported if they worsen or persist.
Serious Side Effects:
- Tendon rupture or inflammation: Fluoroquinolones are associated with increased risk, especially in older adults or those on corticosteroids.
- QT interval prolongation: Can cause serious heart rhythm abnormalities.
- Nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy): Symptoms include burning, tingling, or numbness in the limbs.
- CNS effects: May cause tremors, agitation, hallucinations, or seizures in some people.
- Severe allergic reactions: Such as difficulty breathing, swelling, or hives—seek emergency care immediately.
Discontinue Factive and consult a doctor if any severe symptoms develop.
- Tendinitis and Tendon Rupture: Avoid in patients with a history of tendon disorders or those using corticosteroids.
- Heart Conditions: Caution in patients with a history of arrhythmias or prolonged QT interval.
- CNS Disorders: Use with caution in individuals with a history of seizures or mental health disorders.
- Blood Sugar Changes: Monitor in diabetic patients, as Factive may cause hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia.
- Photosensitivity: May increase sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid tanning beds and use sunscreen and protective clothing outdoors.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Not recommended during pregnancy or lactation unless no alternatives are available.
Patients should undergo a thorough medical history review before beginning treatment with Factive.
- Antacids, iron, or zinc supplements: These can interfere with Factive absorption. Take Factive at least 2 hours before or 3 hours after these substances.
- Antiarrhythmic drugs (e.g., amiodarone): May increase the risk of QT interval prolongation, which can affect heart rhythm.
- NSAIDs: May increase the risk of central nervous system stimulation (e.g., seizures).
- Blood thinners (e.g., warfarin): Antibiotics like Factive can affect INR levels, requiring close monitoring.
- Diabetes medications: Factive may affect blood sugar levels, leading to hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia.
Always inform your doctor of all medications and supplements you are using before starting Factive.
- Standard Dose: 320 mg once daily.
- For ABECB: 5-day course.
- For CAP: 5 to 7 days depending on infection severity.
- Missed Dose: Take as soon as remembered unless it’s close to the next dose. Never double up.
- Overdose: In case of accidental overdose, seek medical help immediately.
Monitor for side effects during treatment, especially tendon pain, dizziness, or skin rashes. Complete the full treatment course as prescribed.
Factive is a prescription-only medication and must be prescribed by a licensed healthcare professional. It is not available over the counter due to the risk of side effects, resistance development, and contraindications in certain populations.
- Medical Evaluation: Required to confirm bacterial infection and ensure appropriate antibiotic use.
- Laboratory Testing: In some cases, culture and sensitivity testing may be used to determine if Factive is effective against the infecting organism.
- Follow-Up: Patients should report any unresolved or worsening symptoms and attend follow-up appointments as directed.
Proper use and oversight are crucial to ensure safe and effective treatment.
