Take Ferrous Sulphate by mouth with water, usually once or twice a day, or as your doctor instructs.
Instructions:

- If it causes stomach upset, take it with a small amount of food
- Swallow tablets whole; do not crush or chew unless directed
- For liquid iron, use the measuring dropper provided, not a household spoon
Missed Dose:
- Take as soon as you remember
- If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one
- Do not double the dose
Ferrous Sulphate gives your body elemental iron, which is the form your body can use. After taking the medicine, iron is absorbed in the stomach and intestines, then enters the bloodstream.
Your body uses iron to make hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. If you don’t have enough iron, your body can’t make enough red blood cells, leading to anemia.
By increasing iron levels, Ferrous Sulphate:
- Helps the body make more hemoglobin
- Improves red blood cell production
- Boosts oxygen flow
Relieves symptoms of iron deficiency
Ferrous Sulphate may cause mild to moderate side effects, especially in the stomach.
Common side effects:
- Constipation
- Dark or black stools (this is normal and not dangerous)
- Nausea
- Stomach cramps
- Diarrhea
- Metallic taste in mouth
Serious but rare side effects:
- Allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling, trouble breathing)
- Iron overdose (especially dangerous in children)
To reduce side effects:
- Start with a lower dose and increase slowly
- Take with food if your stomach is sensitive
- Drink plenty of water and eat high-fiber foods
Always talk to your doctor if side effects are bothering you.
Before using Ferrous Sulphate, tell your doctor if you have:
- Stomach ulcers or inflammatory bowel disease
- Iron overload conditions like hemochromatosis
- Liver disease
- Diabetes
- Allergy to iron supplements
Important precautions:
- Do not take more than the recommended dose
- Keep away from children – iron overdose can be deadly
- Use with care during pregnancy and breastfeeding – only under medical advice
Monitor iron levels with regular blood tests
Certain medications and foods can affect how Ferrous Sulphate works:
- Antacids and calcium supplements reduce iron absorption
- Thyroid medications (e.g. levothyroxine) may not work well with iron
- Antibiotics (like tetracycline and ciprofloxacin) should not be taken at the same time
Avoid taking with:
- Milk, tea, or coffee (these block iron absorption)
Take with:
Vitamin C (like orange juice) to help absorb more iron
Ferrous Sulphate is available both over the counter and by prescription:
- Low-dose tablets (like 65 mg elemental iron) can be bought without a prescription
- High-dose or special formulations may need a doctor’s prescription
A doctor may order:
- Blood tests to check iron, hemoglobin, ferritin
- Monitor your progress and adjust the dose as needed
Always consult a doctor before starting iron supplements to avoid iron overload or incorrect use.
