Overview

Finasteride is a medication primarily used to treat male pattern baldness (also known as androgenetic alopecia) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition where the prostate gland becomes enlarged. It works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that is responsible for hair loss and prostate growth in men.

In the case of hair loss, Finasteride helps to stimulate hair regrowth and slow down further hair loss by reducing the levels of DHT in the scalp. When used for BPH, Finasteride works to shrink the enlarged prostate, improving urinary flow and reducing symptoms like frequent urination, especially at night.

Finasteride is usually taken as a pill and is available only by prescription. It is typically taken once a day, either for hair loss or prostate-related issues, depending on the individual’s condition.
