Florbetapir F 18 is used only in a medical setting:
- You will receive the injection of the tracer by a healthcare professional.
- After the injection, you wait about 30-50 minutes to allow the tracer to reach the brain.
- Then you undergo a PET scan, which takes about 20 minutes.
- During the scan, you lie still while the machine takes images of your brain.
- After the scan, you can usually resume normal activities.
Florbetapir F 18 works by binding to amyloid plaques in the brain. After injection:
- The radioactive tracer travels through your bloodstream to the brain.
- It attaches specifically to amyloid plaques.
- During a PET scan, the tracer emits signals detected by the scanner, creating images.
- These images show where plaques are located and how many plaques are present.
This helps doctors see if a patient has abnormal amyloid buildup, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease.
Florbetapir F 18 is generally safe but may cause some side effects.
