Overview

Fludrocortisone is a synthetic corticosteroid medication that mimics the action of aldosterone, a natural hormone produced by the adrenal glands. It is primarily used to help the body retain sodium and water, which is important for maintaining blood pressure and fluid balance. Because of these properties, fludrocortisone is mainly prescribed to treat conditions where the body cannot maintain proper salt and water balance, such as Addison’s disease and certain forms of low blood pressure (hypotension).

This medicine is available in oral tablet form and is taken under the supervision of a healthcare provider. Fludrocortisone is valuable for people who suffer from adrenal insufficiency—a condition where the adrenal glands do not produce enough hormones—and for some cases of orthostatic hypotension, where blood pressure drops upon standing.
