Overview

Geri-Hydrolac is a topical medication primarily used to treat and prevent dry, rough, scaly, and itchy skin conditions. Its main active ingredient is ammonium lactate, which is a combination of lactic acid and ammonium hydroxide. Lactic acid is a type of alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), known for both its moisturizing and exfoliating properties.

Geri-Hydrolac is available over-the-counter (OTC) and is commonly used for various skin issues, including:

  • Xerosis (severe dry skin): A common condition where skin becomes excessively dry, rough, and sometimes cracked.
  • Ichthyosis vulgaris: A genetic skin condition that causes dry, scaly skin resembling fish scales.
  • Pruritus (itching): Especially when associated with dry skin.
  • Minor skin irritations like diaper rash or skin burns from radiation therapy (though consultation with medical staff is needed for radiation burns).

It works by drawing moisture into the skin and helping to gently shed dead skin cells, leaving the skin smoother and softer. It comes in different strengths (e.g., 5% and 12%) and formulations (lotion or cream).
