Overview

Avacopan, marketed as Tavneos, is an anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (ANCA-associated vasculitis) medication used for the treatment of granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) and microscopic polyangiitis (MPA). It is a complement 5a receptor (C5aR) inhibitor.

It works by inhibiting the activity of complement 5a; such a protein plays a significant role in inflammation and immune response. Avacopan is designed to reduce inflammation and the activity of the immune system that cause damage to blood vessels in such diseases.

Avacopan was approved by the FDA in 2021 to treat ANCA-associated vasculitis in combination with standard treatment, such as corticosteroids, to reduce reliance on long-term steroid use and its associated side effects.
