Overview

Avandaryl is a medication with prescription use only for type 2 diabetes in adults. It contains rosiglitazone (Avandia), which combines with the glimepiride (Amaryl) drug. This combination of drugs controls blood sugar levels in individuals that cannot be controlled through diet, exercise, or other medications.

This drug is known as a thiazolidinedione, a class of drugs that increases the body’s sensitivity to insulin, thereby causing an effective reduction in blood sugar.

Glimepiride belongs to the class of sulfonylureas. This drug stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin, thereby reducing the levels of blood sugar.

Avandaryl is usually prescribed when diet and exercise are not enough to control the blood sugar levels of patients with type 2 diabetes. This combination therapy may provide better control over blood glucose levels for an effective treatment of many patients.
