Overview

Belviq is a prescription weight loss medication. It was prescribed for the treatment of weight loss in adults who were either overweight (BMI ≥ 27 kg/m²) with obesity-related conditions, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol, or those with obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m²). The drug was intended to help patients lose weight by working on the brain to produce feelings of fullness, thereby reducing appetite. Belviq is classified under serotonin receptor agonists.

Belviq was approved by the FDA back in 2012 for immediate marketing in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity as part of a comprehensive weight management program. However, it was withdrawn from the market by the manufacturer, Eisai, in February 2020 because of safety concerns that could arise from a potential long-term risk of cancer. It was withdrawn based on interim results from an ongoing clinical trial.
