Overview

Camila is a brand name for a progestin-only contraceptive pill, commonly referred to as a “mini-pill.” It contains the synthetic hormone desogestrel, which is a form of progestin, a hormone that mimics the effects of the natural hormone progesterone in the body. Camila is primarily prescribed for women who need contraception but cannot take combination oral contraceptives, which include both estrogen and progestin. Progestin-only pills like Camila are often recommended for breastfeeding women, those with certain health conditions, or individuals who experience side effects from estrogen.

Camila is highly effective when used as directed, preventing pregnancy by altering the cervical mucus to make it more difficult for sperm to reach the egg and by thinning the uterine lining, which can prevent implantation. This medication is also used to regulate menstrual cycles in some cases and to reduce the risk of ovarian cysts. Like all medications, Camila must be used carefully and under the guidance of a healthcare provider.
