Overview

Doxazosin is a prescription medication primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate. It belongs to a class of medications called alpha-blockers. Doxazosin works by relaxing the blood vessels and muscles in the prostate and bladder, which helps improve blood flow and ease the symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate.

For high blood pressure, Doxazosin helps to lower blood pressure by dilating (widening) the blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood. For BPH, it works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the prostate and the bladder neck, which can help relieve symptoms like difficulty urinating, frequent urination, and weak urine flow.
