Overview

Edaravone is a medication used primarily to treat Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the motor neurons, leading to muscle weakness, loss of voluntary movement, and eventually paralysis. Edaravone is used to slow the progression of ALS, helping to improve the quality of life and maintain muscle function for a longer period of time.

Edaravone is available in two forms:

  • Injection form: Administered intravenously (IV) in a healthcare setting.

  • Oral form: Taken by mouth, usually after the patient is stable on the injectable form, and under specific medical guidance.

It is believed to work by acting as a free radical scavenger, thereby reducing oxidative stress, which is a key factor in the degeneration of motor neurons in ALS.
