- Edarbyclor is taken once a day.
- Take the medication as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Typically, it is taken in the morning with or without food.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the tablet.
- Consistency: It is important to take Edarbyclor at the same time every day to help remember.
Monitoring: Regular blood pressure checks and kidney function tests are necessary during treatment to ensure the medication is working effectively and to avoid any adverse reactions.
Edarbyclor works through the combined effects of its two active components:
- Azilsartan:
- Azilsartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that works by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to constrict. By blocking this action, azilsartan helps relax the blood vessels, making it easier for blood to flow, thereby lowering blood pressure.
- Chlorthalidone:
- Chlorthalidone is a diuretic that helps the kidneys remove excess salt and water from the body. This leads to a decrease in blood volume, which in turn lowers blood pressure. Additionally, it can reduce swelling and fluid retention that might occur with hypertension.
The combination of these two medications helps achieve a stronger and more effective reduction in blood pressure compared to using either drug alone.
Like all medications, Edarbyclor may cause side effects. Some common and serious side effects include:
- Common Side Effects:
- Dizziness or lightheadedness, especially when standing up
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Nausea
- Cough (due to azilsartan)
- Serious Side Effects:
- Low blood pressure (hypotension): Symptoms include dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. This is more common when starting the medication or increasing the dose.
- Electrolyte Imbalances: Low potassium (hypokalemia) or high potassium (hyperkalemia) can occur, leading to muscle weakness, irregular heartbeat, or fatigue.
- Kidney Problems: Edarbyclor can affect kidney function, so regular monitoring of kidney function (blood tests) is essential.
Angioedema: A rare but serious allergic reaction that causes swelling, especially of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Immediate medical attention is required.
- Kidney Disease: Edarbyclor can affect kidney function. Your doctor may monitor kidney function regularly to ensure the medication is not causing harm. Patients with existing kidney disease may need a lower dose or different treatment.
- Low Blood Pressure: If you have low blood pressure (hypotension), Edarbyclor may worsen this condition. The doctor will carefully monitor your blood pressure when starting the medication.
- Electrolyte Imbalance: Since chlorthalidone is a diuretic, it can lead to electrolyte imbalances, such as low potassium or sodium levels. This can be dangerous if not addressed. Regular monitoring of electrolytes is essential.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Edarbyclor is not recommended for use during pregnancy, especially during the second and third trimesters, as it may harm the baby. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, consult your doctor. Edarbyclor is also not recommended for breastfeeding mothers.
- Starting Dose: Edarbyclor is typically started at one tablet daily (which contains 40 mg azilsartan and 12.5 mg chlorthalidone).
Adjustments: Your doctor may adjust the dose depending on how well your blood pressure responds to treatment and whether you experience any side effects. The dose may be increased to 80 mg azilsartan and 25 mg chlorthalidone per day if needed.
