Overview

Exubera is an insulin inhalation powder that was developed as a convenient alternative to injectable insulin for the management of diabetes. It contains insulin human, which is a synthetic form of the hormone insulin, and is designed to help control blood glucose levels in people with diabetes.

Exubera is inhaled through the lungs, allowing for faster absorption compared to subcutaneous (under the skin) injections. It was introduced as a revolutionary treatment option for individuals with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes who required mealtime insulin but wanted to avoid needles. However, due to various complications and safety concerns, it was withdrawn from the market in 2007. Despite this, Exubera played an important role in the development of other insulin inhalation therapies that have emerged since its discontinuation.
