Overview

Galcanezumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody that is administered by subcutaneous (under the skin) injection. It is marketed under the brand name Emgality. It is specifically approved for use in adults for:

  • The preventive treatment of migraine headaches. This includes both episodic and chronic migraine.
  • The treatment of episodic cluster headache. Cluster headaches are known for their extreme pain and tend to occur in cycles or “cluster periods.”

Galcanezumab belongs to a class of drugs called Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide (CGRP) inhibitors. Unlike pain relievers that treat symptoms after they start, galcanezumab works to prevent the headaches from occurring or to reduce their frequency and severity. It is not intended for acute treatment of a migraine or cluster headache attack.
